Second Life

Believe it or not, these wiry wonders are perennials with the potential to last several years. Overwintered cucamelon plants produce fruits earlier in the second year and a lot more of them, so it’s worth keeping plants from year to year. In cold regions where the soil is prone to freezing, dig up the roots and tubers (which look like swollen roots) before the first frost. Pack them into barely damp potting mix, then store them somewhere cool but frost-free. In mid-spring, transplant the tubers into fresh potting mix, move them to somewhere bright, and gradually increase the amount of water given. Harden plants off (see here), then plant back outside or in a greenhouse once the risk of frost has passed.
